about

A homage in 3 parts to my memories of the notorious Salon Des Amateurs - one of my favourite clubs in the universe.

I've played there a few times and it's been such an influence and inspiration to me over the years, knowing that there's this loose place in the world where u can play sludgy 80bpm at peaktime and ppl fuckin LOVE it....

I played a live cassette set there once, jan schulte frog dancing up front, detlef aka toulouse lowtrax & arne from TFGC smoking millions of cigs hiding low behind the decks, fuck it was a good night.

Anyway that whole scene there has sort of spawned a new generation of sounds - shouts candomble! - and now u don't need to find weirdo industrial shit to play at the wrong speed any more, there's all this fresh tackle and so this is my contribution - an attempt to sort of capture my nights at the Salon in three tunes...

We begin with OPENING CEREMONY - for all the sloppiness of the peak time, the first couple of hours at the Salon have always been very sedate for me. I remember one time arriving and Detlef just put on one side of 'Echoes' by Wally Badarou and let the whole thing play out while we had a coffee. This track with its 4th world palette and Eric Serra-meets-Penguin Cafe naïf playfulness sums up those special hours for me. A benediction of the area, a setting out of the stall.

Moving straight to peak time and NIGHT AT THE SALON is everything that's truly magical to me about that Salon sound... chuggy, drummy, pulsing, quasi-industrial but with daubs from a white-collar palette. And u know, fuckin super acidic and druggy.

And finally SO FUNKY rears its head - I love playing at the Salon because I can play all the super slow balearic music and wrong-speed boogie I love but seldom get to play to dancefloors... Detlef has frequently referred to the music I play as 'So Funky' and the way he says it, I'm pretty certain he doesn't mean it as a compliment... So this one's for u Detlef! Long live the Salon!
